The Lost Wonder of the Ancient World
Inside the magnificent Temple of Zeus once stood one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. Created around 435 BC by the master sculptor Phidias, this colossal chryselephantine (gold and ivory) statue soared to a height of 12.4 meters (41 ft). The seated god was so immense that it was said if he were to stand, he would unroof the temple.
Phidias crafted the statue in a workshop just west of the temple, the ruins of which you can still visit today. For over 800 years, the statue inspired awe in all who saw it, a testament to artistic genius and divine reverence. Though the original was lost to history, its legend endures, and you can see sculptures from the temple's pediments in the Archaeological Museum, giving a glimpse into the grandeur that once dominated this sacred space.
